Book recommendations for PRIDE month
For 30 days, everything from T-shirts to desserts comes in a rainbow scheme to praise the LGBTQ community. But increased perception during Pride month shouldn't serve as just a one-month out of 12 months reminder but as a starting point to expand our diversity all year long.
These books by LGBTQ+ authors as well as characters showed me how beautifully diverse our world is. There have been so many fiction books published in recent years that feature accurate portrayals of LGBTQ+ characters. Below are some of my all-time favorite books with LGBTQ+ characters that I would recommend reading for not only PRIDE month but all year long.
1. The Prophets by Robert Jones Jr.
2. Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
3. Memorial by Bryan Washington
4. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
5. We Are Watching Eliza Bright by AE Osworth
6. On Being Different: What It Means To Be Homosexual by Merle Miller
7. Sorrowland by Rivers Soloman
8. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
9. The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
10. The Hearts Invisible Furies by John Boyne
For Pride month I plan on reading:
- A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
- Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters
I also plan on being more mindful of LGBTQ+ authors and characters alike when selecting books to read all year long.
