How Lucky by Will Leitch book review

“You don't owe anyone anything. They help you because they love you. Why else does anyone help anyone? Letting someone help you is the nicest thing you can do for anyone.”

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars

My heart skipped with joy after reading the synopsis on How Lucky. I am always on the lookout for fiction books where the main character has a disability. The book industry is lacking disability-inclusive stories, in fiction and nonfiction.

The main character Daniel is my new favorite fictional character. Daniel was born with type 2 SMA(spinal muscular atrophy) which restricts him to using a wheelchair. He also had an accident that limited the use of his jaw so he has to use a voice generator box on his iPad to speak. But Daniel doesn't let his disability define him, he is so much more than that. I admired his courage, his positive outlook, kindness, and his perseverance. I also loved the other characters in the book, Travis and Marjani.

A big part of the story revolves around a mystery. Daniel witnesses a crime happen and with the help of his friends, tries to solve it. But it's not your typical mystery. The story is woven with humor and at the same time is completely heartwarming. How Lucky is very funny. At one point Daniel used the screen name flagpolesitta1993(a reference to a 90’s pop song) and I ended up having that song stuck in my head all day.

How Lucky is one of the best books that I've read recently and is definitely one of my favorite books released in 2021! I will definitely look forward to reading anything else by Will Leitch!
